Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, binge-eating disorder and bulimia nervosa are very much on the increase.
Contrary to common perception, these distressing conditions are not just “a diet gone wrong” or “faddy eating”. They are complex psychological, emotional and physiological difficulties that can be extremely detrimental to a person’s well-being and usually have a deep impact upon their family and friends.
Eating disorder behaviours are often prized by the individual despite the obvious cost to themselves. The reason being that this may make them feel better about themselves, feel more successful, more in control and better able to cope and feel more acceptable. This can lead to a sense of confusion for all. It is usually not as simple as “just eat normally”.
For many people, hypnotherapy can be an invaluable resource in changing behaviours, developing skills in managing stress and anxiety by improving confidence and self-esteem. Allowing the brain to switch off its natural stress response can further reduce the need for compulsive feeling and behaviours. This will allow regain of intellectual control and hence better choices for the person’s well-being. All clients are treated with great care and sensitivity, as we work gently to bring about positive changes to improve levels of happiness and confidence.
Emetophobia (fear of vomiting) is a common type of anxiety disorder that can have a significant impact on what, where and indeed whether we are able to eat. It can include fear of being sick, or fear of seeing others vomit. Sufferers will often have worked out avoidance measures, such as not eating in public, staying away from family and friends who are ill, avoiding young babies and children, not visiting hospitals, following a strict (sometimes very restricted and unhealthy) diet, and not taking medications which might upset the stomach. Emetophobia can also be triggered by a general build-up of stress, or by a specific traumatic event (often involving sickness).
Hypnotherapy is very effective at reducing stress and allowing the intellectual part of the brain to reassess unhelpful beliefs and patterns of behaviour. We will work to gently rebuild confidence and teach relaxation techniques, so the fear will reduce and eventually disappear.
Hypnotherapy can help to move forward positively, supporting changes that will improve levels of happiness and wellbeing in all areas of life.
