Hynotherapy for Anger

Anger and anxiety are our natural self-defence responses from our primitive brain when we perceive situations as dangerous or threatening.

Why do we get angry?

Anger is the ‘fight’ response of the fight or flight reaction. As primitive people, we would have needed to fight in certain circumstances, for example to defend ourselves or our families.

What happens when we get angry?

When we experience anger, our body produces stress hormones like adrenaline, and our body becomes flushed with blood to provide extra strength so we can fight. This is why people often go red in the face or neck when angry.

Anger may be experienced as an explosive outburst of rage or a loss of temper, such as road rage. We can also experience anger in the lesser forms of irritation, annoyance, frustration, and lack of patience.

Anger often results from thinking that things ‘should’ be different somehow – “he should have realised I was right”, “she should have helped me”, “they shouldn’t speak to me like that”. When our expectations are not met, or we feel life is somehow unfair, we can become angry. Sometimes anger may be a learned response. As a child, we may have used anger to get our own way, and have continued this behaviour into adulthood. Or we may have grown up with an angry adult and be conditioned to react in a similar way.

How can hypnotherapy help anger management?

While anger can still help protect us in truly dangerous situations by giving us that extra strength, our primitive brain tends to overreact when we are already under stress and perceive everything (like the incoming bill or a careless driver in front of us) as a real danger. By reducing stress levels we can also reduce the anger response in our brain.

That is where hypnotherapy can help. We work directly with that part of the brain that causes anger and help empty the stress bucket and create new ways of reacting in form of new neuro-pathways.
