What is the CONTROL Method?
Imagine if the thoughts, feelings and reactions that seem to happen automatically in your life are not random, but an outdated pattern that once served you and no longer does.
- That anxious feeling when you walk into a room full of people
- Overthinking a message you sent three hours ago
- Avoiding something because your mind imagines all the things that could go wrong
You understand consciously you are safe and worthy, but your reaction tells you something completely
different.
Why Your Mind Works This Way
Your mind is constantly learning and evolving. From your personal experiences, relationships, what people tell you and the situations you go through – your mind creates patterns which help you to respond quickly and navigate the world. Most of the time this is useful, but sometimes these patterns no longer serve you.
- Your mistakes were often criticised, so now you have to get everything right
- Conflict once felt uncomfortable, so you learned to keep others happy
- You were laughed at when you spoke up, so being seen or heard feels scary
- Something frightening happened once in your life, so your mind learned to stay on high alert
These patterns can manifest as anxiety, perfectionism, low self-esteem, avoidance and other behaviours that hold you back. Your mind has learned a specific way of responding at a time in your life, and continued to do the same thing.
There is nothing wrong with you – your mind is simply trying to protect you by using an outdated pattern.
And this is where the CONTROL Method comes in.
What is The Tim Box CONTROL Method?
The CONTROL Method developed by Tim Box is a direct way of working with the subconscious mind to help change patterns of thought, feelings and behaviours that may be holding you back. It communicates directly with this part of the mind by updating automatic patterns of thought and updating your responses.
Rather than trying to think differently, talk yourself out of how you feel, or forcing yourself to do something that feels scary, we work with the part of your mind responsible for many of your automatic responses.
You might consciously say:
‘I shouldn’t feel this anxious.’
‘I need to be more confident.’
‘I really want to be able to say no sometimes.’
But knowing something consciously doesn’t always change how you automatically respond, because your conscious mind isn’t responsible for everything you think, feel and do.
Your subconscious mind plays a powerful role in how you respond – and does what it has learned to do.
Using the CONTROL Method, we start by getting clear about what is happening now and what you want to happen instead. Then we work directly with your subconscious mind to identify the pattern underneath the response and update it.
It’s about helping your mind recognise how the pattern that was once useful for you, no longer is. And how you can respond in a new way that supports the direction you want to take in your life.
How The CONTROL Method Can Support You
As a hypnotherapist, I specialise in anxiety, but it can show up in many different ways such as:
- overthinking
- self-doubt
- obsessive behaviour
- people pleasing/setting boundaries
- low self-esteem
- perfectionism
- fear of being judged
- lack of confidence
- phobias
- avoidance
- addiction
You may spend years trying to manage what you see on the surface, without changing the pattern underneath. This is what I love about the CONTROL Method – it gives us another way of accessing the mind.
The more you understand your mind, the less scary your reactions become. You can begin to understand yourself rather than criticise, building self-confidence and improved self-esteem. Through this method, you feel more in control of the patterns that have been controlling you.
I’ve worked with many clients whom have moved beyond outdated patterns and overcome old barriers to go on to live a life of freedom and joy. It’s a powerful transformation and I love seeing my clients experience more self confidence and be able to do things they once thought impossible.
Why Choose The CONTROL Method?
The CONTROL Method is a step-by-step system for making change in your life. It gives you the tools to make those changes and once learned you have it for life.
With almost a decade of experience as a hypnotherapist, I’ve supported my clients to move beyond their automatic responses and build a life with more choice and possibility. I am so passionate about helping people live a life of more fulfilment and aliveness.

CONTROL Method – How We’ll Work Together
The first step is always a:

This is a chance for us to get to know each other, talk about what’s happening for you and make sure I’m the right person to support you. I’ll also explain how the CONTROL Method works and answer any questions you may have.
It’s important to me that you feel comfortable with me and with the way I work. It’s also a chance for me to see whether the method is a good fit for you.

For most people, three sessions are all we need to create the change they’re looking for.
