Panic attacks are extremely unpleasant and can be very frightening, but are not harmful to us. They can be treated with hypnotherapy to address the anxiety that triggers feelings of panic.
What is a panic attack?
A panic attack is a sudden onset of intense fear that usually comes with some noticeable physical symptoms including:
- Palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate
- Trembling or shaking
- Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Nausea or abdominal distress
- Feeling dizzy, unsteady, light-headed, or faint
- Chills or heat sensation
- Feeling you’re going to die
Although they can seem to last forever, a panic attack is usually short-lived lasting between 5 to 20 minutes.
Panic attacks occur when we are in situations that our primitive brain considers dangerous or threatening to us and responds with fight or flight. The situation may be triggered by specific events or situations or it can occur for no obvious reason.
When we have a panic attack, the primitive brain releases many chemicals, such as adrenaline or cortisol, that affect the brain and body leading to the physical symptoms often reported.
A panic attack is, therefore, a natural response to an actual or perceived stressful or dangerous situation.
Once medical causes for the symptoms have been ruled out then therapy can begin.
How does hypnotherapy work for panic attacks?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a highly effective treatment for panic attacks as it calms the primitive brain, lessening and eventually stopping the panic allowing you to move confidently towards the important goals in your life.
